He was born April 18, 1947, in Anderson. He graduated from Madison Heights High School and attended Ball State University.
He served in the U.S. Army and retired from Delco Remy.
Robert was a friendly and generous man with a great sense of humor. He loved being outdoors, going hunting, and fishing.
He is survived by his brother, James Coats of Alexandria; sister, Catherine (husband, James) Harlan of Anderson; nephews, Quintin Harlan and Daniel (wife, Jennifer) Harlan, all of Anderson; great-niece, Annabelle Harlan of Anderson; and special friends, Jim and Jonnee Murphy of French Lick.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Annabelle (Layton) Coats.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home. The family has chosen cremation.
